By JOURNAL STAFF The winter holidays are a magical time of loving, sharing and rejoicing - as well as being rammed by a reckless New Year's driv- er, sleeping through most of a family Thanksgiv- ing gathering and coming home to find the family dog has eaten five boxes of Christmas chocolates. Mason County news makers shared tales of some of their favorite hol- iday fiascos. For Eric Rehwaldt, an assistant football coach for the Highclimbers, his first Christmas in Shel- ton was memorable thanks to his 5-year- old Dalma- tion. R e hwaldt had purchased several pounds of Godiva chocolates to give as gifts that Christmas before he and his fam- ily took a vacation to San Francisco. "We came home and my Dalmation was lying there with a smile," Re- hwaldt recalled. "There were chocolate wrappers everywhere. She'd found the chocolates in five dif- was being annoying, so my grandma said she was going to roll him up in a carpet and take him to the water," Stroud said. "He didn't believe her, but she did it." Stroud said her grand- mother rolled her brother up in a carpet and dragged him across the beach to the water. "My mother wasn't too happy, but I thought it was funny," Stroud said. At least grandma was awake for the family fes- tivities. Cat Ross, execu- tive director of North Ma- son County Resource in Belfair, recalled that she was working 12-hour days last month called. "It was cold. Not much was going on in Shelton." Byrd was on patrol in Shelton when a car raced past him at about 80 mph on First Street. "I turned on him and away we went," he said. Byrd followed the speeding driver in his new 1976 Dodge patrol car. The driver lost con- trol at the Front Street intersection, but recov- ered and raced up Capital Hill Road. Byrd and sev- eral officers followed the driver through a T-inter- section as he lost control and came to a stop. "Getting those smothering kisses from grandkids and the aromas that filled the air from the kitchen all hit me at once, and as I set- tled into the couch, I pro- ceeded to fall asleep," she said. "We used to wrap empty boxes and we would leave them out in the street," he said. After tying a string to the box, Bakken and his friends would hide and wait for a hapless strang- er to come across the box. When someone picked up the box, Bakken and his buddies would yank it ty Commissioner Lynda Ring Erickson shared an amusing Christmas mishap. "My Christmases are pretty quiet," she said. "I did decide ... about 10 years ago, I was going to do all my Christmas shop- ping in Mason County." After driving from one end of the county to another, Ring Erickson had found presents for most of the people on her list, with the excep- tion of her two teenage nieces. With no luck finding presents for the teens, Ring Erickson bought each of them a miniature Christmas tree in a pot. "To this day, I'm not sure they've forgiven me," she said.
