TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY
TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY
By NATALIE JOHNSON
A convicted sex offender in Mason
County has absconded from his registra-
tion requirements, the Mason County
Sheriffs Office announced Dec. 12.
Authorities say Abraham Eugene
Bates, 27, has made a habit of not regu-
larly checking in with the sheriffs office.
"This is the third 'time now that he
has absconded," said Detective William
Adam of the sheriffs office.
Bates is normally classified as a level
2 sex offender, but was increased to a
level 3 sex offender since absconding.
"Every time that a sex offender ab-
sconds from his registration that's an-
other indicator that he could be reoff-
ending," Adam said.
Bates is described as a white male, is
6-feet tall and weighs 165 pounds. He
has brown eyes and
brown hair that he has
been known to dye yel-
low.
Bates has been re-
quired to register as
a sex offender since
pleading guilty in Sep-
tember 2010 in Kitsap
Colmty Superior Court
Abraham E. to attempted rape in
Bates the third degree, crimi-
nal trespass with sex-
ual motivation in the
first degree and possession of metham-
phetamine.
Bates was released from custody after
serving his sentence for that conviction
in early November, and registered as
homeless.
The sheriffs office is looking for Bates.
The office has advised anyone who sees
him to call 911.

their prcx ious criminal history plaices them in a classification level which reflects the potential to re-oil;end. This sex oflcnder has served the
sentence imposed on him by the c,ourts and has advised the Mason County Sheriff's Office that he will be living in the location below.
BATES IS WANTED BY THE ]POLICE. THIS NOTIFICATION IS NOT INTENDED TO INCREASE FEAR, RATHER, IT IS
OUR BELIEF THAT AN INFORMED PUBLIC IS A SAFER PUBLIC. The Mason County SherifPs Office has no legal authority to
direct ~here a sex ofl~nder may o,r may not live. Unless coull ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever
he chonscs. Sex of[~:nders have allways lived in our communities, but it wasn't until passage of the Community Protection Act of 1990
¢which a2~tndc¢16,x S~'X (ff](~nder reg,L~trat, ion) that law enforcement even knew where they were living. In many cases, law enforcement is now
able Io share that infinmation with you. Citizen abuse of this information to Ihreatcn, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be
after alcd. Furthar, such abuse coulld potentially end law enforcement's ability to do community notifications, We believe the only parson
x~h. ~ ins if community notification ends is the sex otI'endar, since sex ot~ndars derive their power through secrecy.
