Bakala State Farm Insurance,
Mason County Title Co., Urraco
Coffee Co. and Woytowich Design
are the nominees for Business of
the Year by the Shelton Mason
County Chamber of Commerce at
the organization's annual awards
gala Jan. 18 at Little Creek Casino
Resort.
The award honors the business
that made the most significant
contribution to the Mason County
business community during the
past year, according to the cham-
ber. Chamber members have until
Dec. 28 to vote on the nominees.
The other categories are Citizen
of the Year, Volunteer of the Year,
and the President's Choice award.
Tickets for the gala are $50
each, or $90 per couple, and in-
clude dinner and two drink tick-
ets. Reserved tables are available
for $600, and include a personal
server. For reservations, call 426-
2021.
Bakala State Farm has been
owned and operated by Melanie
Bakala since 2010. Her business
at 821 W. Railroad Ave. was re-
cently recognized as one of the top
100 State Farm agencies in the
country.
Bakala has more than 17 years
of experience in marketing, sales
and sales management in the
banking and insurance industries.
She serves as the chamber's vice
president of member services, and
as a board member of the Shelton
Skookum Rotary Club. She also
devotes time to Sound Learning,
• Friends of the Library and other
nonprofit groups.
In September, Bakala received
the Above and Beyond Award from
the Washington Committee for
Employer Support of the Guard
and Reserve, an agency for the
U.S. Department of Defense. The
award honored Bakala for her sup-
port for her employee, Chris Mey-
er, who missed six months of work
when he was deployed overseas to
Bahrain.
Mason County Title Com-
pany has been serving custom-
ers since 1907, when Shelton at-
torney D.F. Wright incorporated
Mason County Abstract and Title
Co. to compile abstracts of title
on land. Five years later, Wright
-- who later became a state Su-
preme Court judge -- licensed the
abstract company to write title in-
surance and changed the name to
Mason County Title Insurance.
The business was sold in 1917
to Alden C. Bayley, and is now
owned by his grandson, David
Bayley, and his wife, Nancy.
Since 1999, the company has is-
sued title insurance policies as an
authorized agent for national title
insurance underwriters Stewart
Title Guaranty Company of Hous-
ton and Old Republic National Ti-
tle Insurance Co. in Minneapolis.
The company operates at three
locations: a title operations at 130
W. Railroad Ave. in Shelton, an es-
crow operations at 124 N. Second
St. in Shelton, and another escrow
office at 23552 N.E. State Route 3
in Belfair.
David Bayley serves on the
board of directors for Sound Learn-
ing. The Bayleys support Music in
the Park, golf tournaments, the
chamber's beautifications and oth-
er non-profit organizations.
Urraco Coffee Co. was
launched in 2003 by Matt Dorcy
and his parents Kevin and Kathy
Dorcy at 628 W. Cota St. in down-
town Shelton.
The company is committed to
buying, roasting and serving fair
trade-certified coffee to help create
a better future for farmers, pro-
tect the environment, and promote
health and wellness. The coffee is
certified organic.
Most of the employees grew up
in Mason County. The company
donates goods to efforts by non-
profit organizations and offers a
venue for family-friendly music
programs.
Woytowich Design has been
serving clients with advertising,
marketing and design projects
since 1998. Owners Mark and
Linda Woytowich moved to Mason
County in 2001, and the couple
and their associates create web-
sites, email newsletters, video
productions, web streaming video,
print ads, direct mail, public rela-
tions, ghost writing and speeches.
Mark worked as a newspaper
reporter and playwright in New
York City, as a national magazine
editor, and as a copywriter at a
Midwest advertising firm. Linda
has painted, taught art to chil-
dren, and created a line of dino-
saur greeting cards. She special-
izes in computer design, including
print work and website creation.
The nominees for Citizen of the
Year are Mattthew Blegen of An-
na's Bay Center for Music, Patti
Case of Green Diamond Resource
Co., Russ Denney of Pantorium
Cleaners, Rachel Hansen of Im-
age in Action Design, retiree Lee
Hatch, Rachel Hilburn of the Ra-
chel Hilburn Breast and Cervical
Cancer Fund, and the Rev. Joseph
Mikel of St. David's Episcopal
Church.
The nominees for Volunteer
of the Year are Berti' Brodsky of
American Family Insurance, Kari
Kling of Fournier Insurance Solu-
tions, Ron Pannell of the Shelton
Kiwanis Club and Allison Wagner
of Falcon Financial Inc.
