'Blowout' wins aren't what they seem lowout losses seem to be com- monplace when it comes to Shelton basketball, but from what I've seen, these games are not what they seem. On Dec. 12, Wilson defeated the Shelton girls' basketball team 84-9 and Shelton didn't score in the second half. I know this might lead some to questions about what the Lady High- climbers are doing on the court, to lose with such a lopsided score. The answer to that question is: They're doing the best they can. Wilson's team consisted of seven seniors, one sophomore and one fresh- man while Shelton has one senior, six juniors, one sophomore and two fresh- men. That's quite a bit more varsity experience on the Wilson team than Shelton has. In basketball terms, the Shelton girls also are fairly short. The tallest measures in at 5-feet 9-inches while the shortest is just under 5-1. Com- paratively, Wilson's tallest girl was 6-1 while the shortest was 5-1. With height on their side, it was always going to be a keep-away battle while playing against Shelton. The mercy rule for basketball is that once one team has a 40-point lead, the game switches to a running clock at halftime. I0n a way, this is merci- ful as it makes the second half of the game go faster, but it means that a team has to continue playing, knowing it has little hope of catching up By EMILY and almost no hope of HANSON winning. This is quite demoralizing and I imagine it can mess with players' heads, throwing off their game and making it even harder to score. Shelton head girls' basketball coach Aaron Leth said his team never gives up and I believe that. When I watch these girls play, I see that they don't give up. They stick to their opponents and try their hard- est to defend their opponents, even if the size and skill differential is too great. The problem is they are simply outmatched by most of their oppo- nents. They can't match up height-wise, they're younger than most of the teams they'll face and though they try their hardest, some teams are more talented, as is true in any sport. When ! watch these girls play, I see that they don't give up. They stick to their opponents and try their hardest to defend their opponents, even if the size and skill differential is too great. So I know it's easy to look at lopsided scores and say the team didn't show up to play or quit at halftime, but I can guarantee that is not what happens with the Shel- ton girls. Perhaps if more people showed up for games to support the team, they'd see how hard these girls re- ally work.
