Outgoing Port of Shelton Commissioner Jack Miles sat at his last
commission meeting Tuesday and objected to having Dick Taylor sworn
inon the same day.
Port commissioner's swearing-in
delayed until after new year
By NATALIE JOHNSON
The Port of Shelton com-
mission planned to swear
in its newest commis-
sioner, Dick Taylor, dur-
ing its last meeting of 2011
on Tuesday, but its plans
changed after last-minute
complaints from outgoing
Commissioner Jack Miles,
said Commission Chair Jay
Hupp.i
Hupp said Taylor asked
to be sworn in during the
meeting, so as to be ready
for the first meeting of 2012
on Tuesday, Jan. 3. How-
ever, he later called Hupp
to cancel, saying he didn't
want to be a part of "con-
troversy" expected at the
meeting.
Miles told the Journal
that he told the other com-
missioners via email that
he felt swearing in Taylor
while Miles was still a com-
missioner would be "inap-
propriate."
"I felt it was my day,"
Miles said.
Taylor, however, said
Mason County staff told
him that being sworn in
during the Port's last meet-
ing of the year was com-
pletely appropriate and ex-
pected.
Taylor said he received
an email from Miles saying
that he should "be prepared
for a fight tomorrow."
In order to avoid such a
fight, Taylor didn't attend
the meeting.
Taylor will be sworn in
as a port commissioner on
Tuesday, Dec. 27 in Amber
Finlay's courtroom at the
Mason County Courthouse.
"I didn't want controver-
sy," Taylor said. "I'm trying
to rebuild things."
At his last Port of Shel-
ton meeting as a commis-
sioner, Miles took the op-
portunity to make a final
statement.
"I certainly learned a
lot," he said. "I'm going to
take that forward with my
future endeavors."
Conley Watson present-
ed Miles with a card signed
by some of his constitu-
ents, thanking him for his
years of service at the port.
"I want to thank you for
your service to the Port
of Shelton these last six
years," Hupp added•
