During November and early Decem-
ber. Shelton School District's Title I and
Homeless programs held a new socks
and underwear drive to benefit the dis-
trict's homeless and low m-come stu-
dents.
The drive was organized by Title I
program secretary Jean Fairbrother and
Miles Nowlin, the district's family sup-
port liaison who works with homeless
families, children and youth.
District employees, along with em-
ployees from Mason General Hospital
donated new socks and undergarments
for use in the district's clothing bank,
which benefits students classified as
homeless or in transitional housing
situations or in need of basic need sup-
port.
The Shelton Education Association
and the Shelton Educational Office Per-
sonnel unions also donated a total of
$400 in cash, which helped purchase ad-
ditional new undergarments.
Many of the district's students have
significant basic living needs. At the end
of the 2010-11 school year, student en-
rollment in the free/reduced meal pro-
gram hit a district-average high of 63
percent in grades K-12.
As of Dec. 1, enrollment in the free/
reduced meal program at the district's
three elementary schools was: Ever-
green 89.5 percent; Bordeaux 65 percent;
Mountain View 60 percent.
The district also serves a number of
students classified as living in transi-
tional or homeless living situations.
By the end of June 2011, the district
had counted and served 415 homeless
children and youth at some point during
the school year.
Eighty-six of these students were un-
accompanied youth living in situations
Without a custodial parent.
Shelton School District has applied
for and received a federal competitive
grant since 2005 that helps meet some
of the clothing, school supply and school
fee needs of homeless children and
youth.
For more information on the district's
clothing and school supply program, con-
tact Gail Straus, Federal Programs Di-
rector (426-2151) or Miles Nowlin, Fam-
ily Support Liaison 462-2237.
