[ I met George Booth in 1973, I was 11, and he was 44. He was a school teacher in Shelton. My family had moved there the year before. I had started selling coins to classmates with larger allowances than mine when r I was 8, but by 11 I was ready to branch out and go to the Seattle Center Coin Show as a dealer with a table. But how to get the 90 miles from my home to the show? George Booth readily volunteered to take me to the show with him in his van, helping me load my inventory, lights, showcases, and supplies alongside his. He let me share half his bourse table, at a cost of $6.25 -- but more than anything, he shared his knowledge of numismatics and of business. • . .~ j For 5 years, until I turned 16 and got a drivers license and my own car, I relied on George Booth for rides to all the coin shows in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. We shared countless hours visiting on the way to the show, and talking about what we had bought and sold all the way home. I was filled with youthful exuberance that he kindly and patiently encouraged. He introduced me to the other dealers, giving me the instant credibility necessary for someone so young, trying to get established. In my teenage years I would often find coin collections to buy that were beyond my finances. George frequently lent me the money, then we sold the coins together. He taught me valuable lessons about fairness, business, working with people, and life. He was my friend, my mentor, and the reason I have a wonderful career in numismatics.
