"lighting of the tree"

lawn was held on the
night of Friday, Nov.
29. More than 70 prizes
were handed out, thanks
to donations from 55
Shelton businesses. The
more than 2,000 people
who attended heard
a performance by the
Amaranth Choir, and
then joined in singing
Christmas carols under
the direction of
Dean Palmer.
Local businesses
stayed open late
for evening shop-
ping.

dedicated to ads for local
shops that were offering
special Christmas prices
on Friday and Saturday.
Ziegleffs Camera Shop
had "gadget bags" for
$2.95. The Sears Cata-
log Store offered $30 to
$40 worth of merchan-
dise cards to customers
who bought a Coldspot
refrigerator or freezer.
Fessler's Ice Cream Cen-
ter was selling banana
boats and hot fudge sun-
daes for 29 cents each,
while Chris' Ice Cream
("we make our own")
advertised a half-gallon
of ice cream for $1. J.C.
Penney's was selling
men's flannel shirts for
$1.33, and Mode-O-Day
featured 10 percent off
all articles in stock.
("As a guest or host-
ess you will want one
of our swishy feminine
skirts ... rustling taf-
feta, dusted with gold or
silver or embossed with
velvet ... $5.99 - $6.99.")
Johnny's Music Box had
a three for $1 sale on all
"78" RPM records. The
Lumbermen's Mercan-
tile spot simply read, "It
will pay you to read our
ad on page 16." Page
16 was a full-page Lum-
bermen's ad offering a
10 percent discount on
all merchandise in the
store, and encour-
aging shoppers
to be prepared
for Christmas
expenses by open-
ing a revolving
charge account.
Shelton's out-
door Christmas
decorating contest,
sponsored by the Junior
Chamber of Commerce
(Jaycees), kicked off
on Dec. 1. Contestants
were asked to fill out
entry blanks and mail
them to the Jaycees no
later than Dec. 18. Judg-
ing would be based on
artistic merit, lighting
techniques, originality
and ingenuity. Trophies
for first and second place
were to be awarded in
the categories of Nativ-
ity, Novelty and Tradi-
tional.
The Jaycees also
sponsored Shelton's first
trade fair, held from 7
to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and
6 in the Shelton Ar-
mory. Nineteen booths
showcased the latest
merchandise from lo-
cal businesses, with an
emphasis on Christmas
shopping, and five 1958

automobiles were on display. The
event included food concessions
and carnival games for children.
The Shelton Jayettes -- wives
of Jaycee members -- were also
busy in December. After help-
ing out with the trade fair, they
turned their attention to wrap-
ping toys collected in the annual
Jaycee toy drive. They then spon-
sored a pre-holiday fashion show
at the Jaycee Hall at the airport,
held a children's Christmas
party at the same location, and
furnished a complete Christmas
dinner and gifts for every member
of one of the community's needy
families.
At his own expense, Mayor
Herb Rotter sent Christmas trees
to the mayor of Montgomery,
Alabama, and professor Alfredo
G. Vargas in Jalisco, Mexico, as
tokens of appreciation for kind- enough money remaining to pro-
