The spirit of Christmas may
be realized in many ways - in a
glittering Christmas tree, a
cherished family tradition, or a
favorite carol. Other lands have
different customs in the
celebration of Yuletide. In spite
of the difference in ceremonies
and celebrations there is one thing
that is the same - a universal
Christmas spirit. The Shelton
Public Library can supply you
with information about the way
Christmas is celebrated around
the world.
It's Time For Christmas by
Sechrist and Woolsey presents
Christmas as Christ's birthday.
The authors have searched out the
history of Christmas customs,
legends and celebrations to point
out the true meaning of

Christmas.
Another book by Elizabeth
Sechrist, Christmas Everywhere,
presents a selection of stories
from around the world. Santa
Claus is to be found everywhere
even though his name may not
always be the same. These stories
show this universality of the
Christmas spirit.
"Christmas traditions by
William Muir Auld deals largely
with old time beliefs and customs.
These traditions do not entirely
belong to the past since we still
follow some of them and have
modified others. Knowing the
origin of these customs can make
the holiday all the more
meaningful.
The Swedish Christmas is a
glowing collection of photographs
and drawings, tales and anecdotes
that captures the magic of a
Swedish Christmas from the
neonqit streets and markets of
Stockholm to the snow covered
towns and villages beyond. It is a
drama of contrasts, pagan
customs and Christian rituals.
In 46 Days Of Christmas; A
Cycle Of Old World Songs,
Legends And Customs, Dorothy
Spicer brings together folk poems,
ceremonies and legends from
nineteen of the countries where
Christmas is a long and varied
feast. She describes such popular
customs as lantern processions in
Rumania, German holiday fairs
and Portugal's Cake of the Kings.
Explore the many ways of
Christmas at the Shelton Public
Library. The library is open
noon-5:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Monday through Thursday this
