Fake Furs
May Be Used
Many Ways
Fur look-alikes range from
flat to fluffy, and can be used for
a variety of dress and sports
garments, Jo-Ann Pizzello,
County Extension Agent, says.
The fake furs are pile fabrics,
made from a variety of synthetics
- acetate, acrylic or rayon and
have either a woven or knit back.
The type of fur chosen will be a
guide to the pattern used. The
bulkier, deep-pile furs require a
simpler design than the smooth
pelt fabrics. In all cases, avoid
eased seams. A raglan sleeve is
easier to handle than "a set-in
sleeve.
''With Nap" yardage
requirements need to be used to
determine the amount of fabric to
buy, as fake furs are napped
fabrics. Some of the fakes are
washable, but most require dry
cleaning, so read the hangtag.
Make pattern alterations
before cutting. Always use "With
Nap" layout and for deep pile
furs, the nap should run down.
Work with the fabric spread out
wrong side up and pin the pattern
to the backing. With the bulkier
fabrics, cut each pattern piece
separately.
Cut with sharp shears, but
use a single edge razor blade for
deep pile furs. Cut only the fabric
backing, not the pile. Do not cut
the pattern notches as they will
fray, and make all markings on
the wrong side of the fabric with
tailor's chalk.
Stitch the fakes with a long
stitch, eight to 10 stitches per inch,
using loose balanced tensiofi and
mercerized cotton thread. 'Test
stitch on a scrap of fabric. Stitch
in the direction of the nap and
push the pile away from the
seams. Hairs caught in the seams
can be pulled out with a pin.
Bulk can be eliminated by
shearing the pile from all seam
allowances, and by slashing
through the center fold of all
darts and pressing them open.
Seams should be finished in
unlined garments.
To press, use fingers where
possible. Press with an iron and
steam on a needle-board or several
layers of terry cloth towels.
Remember to use the synthetic
setting on the iron. Leather and
leather-look fabrics are a
compliment to the fur fabrics and
make attractive bound
buttonholes.
The fake furs also can be used
as linings for a special touch of
luxury in an otherwise plain coat,
Miss Pizzello adds. Sewing the
fake furs is not difficult, and the
seamstress need not be limited by
the conventional use of fur. She
can let her imagination be as wild
as the fabric.

the case of many American

for sure.
The facts are that U.S. Public
Health Service officials are
predicting German measles -
rubbella - will be eradicated by
1973.
And they expect to reach that
goal in a campaign aimed at
innoculating children - 60
million of them - by 1973.

But why children and not
women?
According to medical
authorities, if you prevent the
disease in children, adults won't
be likely to come into contact
with it.
To date, 20 million children
between the ages of 3 and 10 have
been vaccinated.
Still, rubella remains a
principal cause of miscarriages
and birth defects in the United
States.
And there is no vaccination
campaign specifically for women
of child-bearing age who are
justifiably concerned about the
disease.
So, what's a girl to do?
She should, says the Health
Insurance Institute, talk things
over with her physician.
He'll tell her that many
women are not being directly
vaccinated because doctors fear
they could inadvertently cause a
woman who may be pregnant and
not know it, to contract the
disease.
Of course, under the proper
circumstances most women who
want the vaccine may have it.
The Public Health Service
puts it this way:
"Pregnant women should not
be given the vaccine, and
immunization of females of
child-bearing age should not be
undertaken unless a physician
determines that the person is
susceptible, not pregnant, and will
not become pregnant for two
months following vaccination."

resulted from the last epidemic of
German measles - also called
three-day measles -in 1964.
Besides the heartache, there is
a dollar cost which is estimated
at $2 billion.
Because German measles runs
in cycles, there could be another
epidemic in 1971-73. The hope
behind the child vaccination
program is to minimize its effects.
Although the suffering caused
by the disease cannot be
measured, the Institute said,
many families are helped with the
financial aspect of the problem
through health insurance which
pays for treatment of youngsters
born with defects because of the
disease.
Rubella infection of the
pregnant woman may result in her
child being born with congenital
heart disease, mental retardation,
deafness or cataracts - if it
survives birth.
The Federal government
began its 50 million vaccination
campaign last summer to try to
end the problem.
Voluntary and private
business organizations including
the National Center for Voluntary
Action and many of the nation's
largest health insurance companies
have been participating in an
informational program to advise
the public of the value of
inoculations. If you're concerned,
see your doctor.
