New Su A new Skokomish Valtey Substation and the connecting transmission line was completed and energized for the first time last Thursday by Mason County PUD No. 1. The new substation is intended to improve the quality and reliability of electric service to customers residing in the Skokomish Valley, Valley Center area and Skokomish Indian Reservation, according to manager Les Hein. The substation was erected by PUD No. 1 personnel and was built at a cost of $58,700. The transmission line was cleared by C. H. Danard Co., Olympia and was constructed by POTELCO, Inc., Tacoma at a cost of $71,100 All facilities were designed by the Howard Zenier and Associates, Consulting Engineers, Vancouver. In the design and construction of the new substation, every effort was made to develop a structure that would be low in profile and as unobstructive as possible. After completion of landscaping next year, the station should be a welcome addition to the neighborhood, Hein commented. Durning the peak traffic hours of the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the Capital Restaurant will serve free coffee to road-weary drivers. It is part of the National Coffee Stop Program, designed to reduce highway fatalities by getting motorists off the road for frequent rest breaks. "Safety experts strongly recommend rest breaks as basic to safe driving," explained Mable Long, owner of the restaurant. "But people, rushing to holiday activities, tend to put off, or ignore, rest breaks," she PUD No. 1 electric system were completed recently or are to be completed in the next few weeks.
