Greeting Drawn by Linda Blanton 6th Grade Bordeaux School 0 CENTER er rlne 0 le r ospl al ires orpsman By JAN DANFORD Accompanied by his wife, Bernice, and in the proud presence of four generations of family, Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Trine Moorhead after 30 years of active service with the U. S. Navy was retired with honors in ceremonies conducted in the Naval Hospital in Bremerton on November 19. T h e N avy Commendation Medal, given in recognition of sustained high performance, was awarded to Trine Moorhead by the secretary of the Navy, bringing to a total of ten the impressive medals he has received. Also presented was a mahogany plaque, with intricately carved border, bearing his insignia and listing his 17 duty stations. In a letter of commendation issued by Commanding Officer Captain R. G. Brown it is emphasized that Trine Moorhead, who enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 20, 1 940, advanced rapidly through the enlisted ratings to be appointed Chief Pharmacist's Mate on Oct. 1, 1943. Thus established was an all-time all-Navy record for advancement through grades to Chief; the record still stands. In 1958 Congress authorized two more grades of Chief, Senior and Master. Trine Moorhead was promoted to Senior Chief in May of 1959 and to Master Chief in December, 1960. He was among the first of the Chief Hospital Corpsmen selected for the new Senior Chief rating. Although born in Indianapolis, Ind. Moorhead was raised in the bay area of California and was graduated from Oakland High School and from Williams Junior College in Berkeley. He was employed by General Motors and worked for the JRV Mining Co. in the Sierras prior to joining the Navy in San Francisco. Trine Moorhead was on the USS Nevada when it was sunk in Pearl Harbor. "For two weeks the ship's company slept in a sugar cane field," he recalls, "and then moved into the Block Arena, a Navy recreation center temporarily utilized as barracks, where I slept on the concrete between rows of seats. I finally tried a pool table as a bed, but that was even worse than the floor." When his ship came to Bremerton for repairs in May of 1942 he met Bernice Latzel, who became his wife. He also fell in love with the Pacific Northwest in general and with Shelton in particular. "I knew then," he said, "that this was the place in which I wished to retire. Serving on two destroyers during the Korean Campaign, and in the Aleutians on the Attu Campaign, through the Canal Zone on Convoy duty in the North Atlantic, active in the lwo Jima and the Okinawa Campaigns, Trine Moorhead was in Tokyo Bay when the Peace Treaty was signed, following which was landed from his ship the first cavalry division to enter Yokahama. Moorhead, in July, 1969, sold his San Diego home and embarked on his "Twilight Cruise", the last of his career. He now enjoys his new house in Parkwood, and anticipates the years of hunting and fishing that lie before him. On the spacious mantle of the Moorhead's living room there stands a Navy Clock presented to him at his retirement ceremonies by his shipmates; and filling a corner of the room there is a huge split-leaf philodendron plant. "The philodendron was originally in the Chief's Mess in :he Bremerton Naval Hospital," Moorhead explained, "and as the leading Chief in the hospital I was continually growling about the fact that it was neglected. They did try to take care of it, but it wasn't done the way 1 thought it should be." At the close of the ceremonies when the Moorheads returned to their car, sitting beside it was the huze and sprawling urnful of vegetation. "It's all yours," "he was told, "including the problem of getting it into the car." Retired Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Trine Moorhead and his wife have two daughters, Joyce Schneider and Cathy Keyser. They have a grandson, Chad Schneider, who made his first public appearance at the age of one month when he attended his grandfather's retirement ceremony• Greeting Drawn by Kathy Monroe 5th Grade, Evergreen School SAEGER On Hillcrest ,AN Atop f,~ Greeting Drawn by Mike Ashley 4th Grade Evergreen School JIM INC.
