Fires swept 160,414 acres of
National Forest lands in the
Pacific Northwest Region of the
Forest Service-USDA in 1970.
Most of the acreage was in the
State of Washington, 157,514,
where 1,1 15 fires occurred.
Oregon had 2,262 fires, but only
about 3,000 acres burned.
The total acreage burned was
the highest since 1929 when
395,1 16 acres of Forest
Service-protected lands were
scorched. The Regional average
for the past five years is 18,374
acres.
Most damage resulted from
lightning storms in July and
August during critically dry
weather. The Region experienced
2,015 lightning fires, the second
highest on record (since 1908}.
There were 1,370 fires caused by
man, the largest number (651 ) by
campfires or abandoned warming
fires.
Biggest of the season's
conflagrations occurred Aug. 21
to Sept. 11. A lightning storm hit
southern Oregon Aug. 21 and
swept north into Canada. The
storm left 176 fires in four days,
and carelessness by man added 26
in the same period.
Hardest hit was the
S
ear Is
Wenatchee National Forest, where
burning conditions were the most
extreme in 30 years. When the
disaster was over, 112,700 acres
of the Wenatchee and Okanogan
National Forests had burned.
Largest of the fires was the
Entiat, 52,721 acres, which was
given its name when several large
fires in the Entiat valley area
north of Wenatchee burned
together.
At the peak of the"bust",
Aug. 3 1. there were 11,248
persons working on fires in the
Region, including more than
8,500 on the Wenatchee National
Forest. The firefighters came
from every National Forest in the
Nation. Many persons from other
agencies, private industry
workers, and special crews from
as far away as Maine helped fight
ig
the fires. Besides actual fireline
duty, work ranged from cooking
to time-keeping. About 100
women worked on the fires.
There were 350 smokejumpers in
Washington and Oregon Aug. 31,
along with 70 helicopters, 18 air
tankers, etc.
The north-central Washinton
area the previous month (July
16-29) had fires which burned an
area totalling 28,468 acres, again
mostly on the Okanogan and
Wenatchee National Forests.
Largest of the fires was the
15,090-acreSafety Harbor fire
near Lake Chelan.
The Wenatchee National
Forest fires were fihned
extensively by Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer. which has produced a
one-hour documentary scheduled
on NBC television Feb. 5.
Help build schools, send
class supplies to educate
children. It's one of many
ways you can make the
world better for people by
8iving to CARE. Mail your
check, whatever you can.
