Thursday, Dec. 24, 2020 Shelton-Mason Journal — Page A—1 9 Family moves into 33rd local Habitat house By Gordon Weeks gordon@masoncounty.com On Sunday, the Smith family moved into their new home in the Shorecrest area, courtesy of Habitat for Humanity of Mason County, dozens of volunteers and their own “sweat equity.” At a dedication ceremony, the family — Jimi, Katie, and children Blayde and Annilease — were handed the keys to the nonprofit’s 33rd house. Feb. 28 is the deadline to apply to be the occupants of the group’s 34th house, also in the Sho- recrest area. The Smiths moved into a three—bed- room, two-bathroom house that mea- sures almost 1,200 square feet. For the group, the house was put together in “record time,” a little more than six months from groundbreaking to its dedication, said Rachel Goff, the group’s volunteer coordinator, That feat is especially impressive during the pan- demic, when distancing requirements allow fewer people at the site, she said. As for volunteers, the agency in par- ticular is looking for “anyone who is will- ing to swing a hammer, dig trenches, to help in the outdoors,” Goff said. Founded in 1976, Habitat for Human- ity is a nonprofit organization working with communities in all 50 states and in more then 70 countries.
