Craftsman: ‘What you get is somethin

Boyd laughed and agreed
when he was asked whether he
was still basically just making
his own toys.
While Boyd appreciates old-
er models of vehicles, his work
in the automotive industry
kept him current enough with
contemporary styles that he
never developed a preference
for any one era.
“Every decade of cars holds
something of interest to me,
especially as the styles have
evolved,” Boyd said. “I’m fasci-
nated by how those fins grew
out of the late 1950s, for exam-
ple, but I don’t have a particu-
lar favorite. Even when I look
at cars today, I can appreciate
the directions they’re moving
in, and some of the old stuff
that seems to be coming back.”

T Ford was selected after he
responded to a call for submis-
sions that was posted in the
Shelton-Mason County Jour-
nal, and in spite of his self-ef-
facing nature, he clearly takes
pride in how his hard work on
this piece yielded something
distinctive. .
“This was a very tedious
piece to do in stained glass,”
Boyd said. “You have to work
with copper foil as your frame—
work, then apply solder very
neatly. If you’re not careful, the
heat can crack the glass. Still,
what you get is something I’ve
never seen before or since.”

Review: Both films share being made just under the wire

of Jack Skellington and Sally.
What'both films also share is how
much they were made just under the
wire, for skeptical movie studios that
didn’t entirely understand what sorts
of stories they had on their hands,
by crews of talented people who were
on the launching pad of broader star-
dom.
Will Ferrell had never solo-head-
lined a feature film before being cast
in “Elf,” and even after its release,
it would be another five years before
its director, Jon Favreau, would hit
the big time with 2008’s “Iron Man,”
which in turn gave birth to the Mar-
vel Cinematic Universe, and paved
the way for Favreau to create “The
Mandalorian” (aka The Baby Yoda
Show) for Disney+.
And while “Elf” shot to the top of
the box office in short order, “Tim
Burton’s The Nightmare Before ’
Christmas” required a slow‘burn
post-theatrical simmer of VHS and
DVD rentals for audiences to get hip

If you’ve enjoyed any of Netflix’s
pop culture documentaries to date,
you should find plenty to appreciate
in “The Holiday Movies That Made
Us,” which employs the same level of
cleverly edited juxtaposition of vari—
ous talking heads’ unrehearsed reac-
tions to each recalling their shared
story in very different ways.
This is particularly prevalent in
the contrasting accounts of Elfman
and Thompson, who were not only
“N

in a relationship at the time “The
Nightmare Before Christmas” was
being made, but they were doing
most of their work out of the same
home, which doesn’t mean they agree
on how Elfman initially felt about
Thompson’s screenplay;
Given how many “happy accidents”
the creators of these films agree made
them possible, one could almost call
it a Christmas miracle that we got
them at all, and if nothing else, that
alone makes “The Holiday Films That
Made Us” worth a watch.
