SCOTT VALLEY presses his opponent matward during Saturday's

INDEX ALOFT, as has become his trademark, 129-pound champion Clint
Morgan of Shelton acknowledges his victory in the finals of Saturday's
prestigious Christmas Tournament, the second annual Climber wrestling
event featuring teams from eight schools, half of them triple-A. At left is
runner-up Paul McDougall of Stadium High School.
e
Morgan earned not only the
distinction of being Shelton's first
home invitational tourney winner
but also a word of praise from
Coach Wentz. "Clint's very
competitive," he said, noting the
Climber's 5-0 record. "lie's
become even more fierce than he
was last year."
Morgan finished 17-9 last
season. He qualified for State, but
in his second match there he
sustained an injury and had to
withdraw. Wentz said he would
not be at all surprised if his
129-pounder does very well there
this time around.
Morgan also won "Animal of
the Week" honors for his 20-2
win last Thursday when the
Climbers hosted Capital.
Although Shelton was sixth in
the eight-team tournament
Saturday, Wentz was not
disappointed. He had set out to
get some top-flight wrestlers for
Shelton's second annual
tournament, and he said Monday
he was most pleased with the
results.
"This tournament was more
competitive than I thought it
would be - and I expected it to
be super. There's no doubt in my
mind that you'll see every one of
the winners at State this year."
The team leader was
Enumclaw, with 110% points, but
not until the very final event was
the victory assured. Enumclaw's
heavyweight, John Lind, won by
the only pin in the finals to turn
back runner-up Clover Park's bid
to take the title. Clover Park
finished with 108 points and
would have won had Lind not
pinned his opponent.
Third place went to R. A.
Long with 100~6 points, followed
by Stadium (85½), Franklin
Pierce (59½), Shelton (43), Tyee
(39) and Central Kitsap (35½).
Valley, Johnston, Sharpes and
Devaney all won two matches and
lost one en route to their
third-place finishes in the 115-,
122-, 178-and 190-pound
divisions, respectively. All
wrestled well even in defeat, said
Wentz.
Among the cream of the
tourney was R. A. Long's
defending State 101-pound
champ, Rich Madeiros. He won
his division, as did State standouts
Dean Dickson (135), and Phil
Lercher (14)) of Enumdaw,
Stadium's Frank Garolima (115),
Clover Park's Marty Stevens (I 68)
and R. A. Long's Randy Winiger
(178).
Shelton's Dale Brewer, third
at State last year in the
148-pound bracket, sat out the
tourney and both league matches
for disciplinary reasons. He'll be
seeing his first action of the
season January 8 against Chehalis.
Visitors Capital on Thursday
and Tumwater this Monday won
just four varsity matches between
them as the Climbers blew them
out by the respective rather
convincing scores of 42-9 and
52-18. Each represents the widest
margin of defeat for the loser this
season, and Tumwater's
opponents have included
expected powerhouses Aberdeen,
North Thurston and Timberline.
Perhaps more important to
Wentz, though, was the recent
acquisition of Huston and Martin
for the heavyweight spot which
before cost his team an automatic
six points on forfeiture. Huston
wrestled - and won by a pin -
Monday night, and Wentz expects
LOOKING ON LAST THURSDAY with something less than
boundless rapture are Bob and son Richard Velkov of

148-pound bracket. George came back with a vengeance,
though, pinning his Tumwater foe Monday night as the

to have Martin ready for the next
match.
Huston wrestled in junior high
school and turned out briefly last
season. Martin, who left the
varsity basketball team to help
out the grapplers - with both
coaches' blessings - has never
wrestled, but Wentz expects the
All-State linebacker to be
competitive in short order.
The Climbers' sick and injured
include Dave Cox, who returned
to action with a win last
Thursday; Dave Johnston, who
tore ligaments in his back during
the tournament; and Rusty
Wickett and Dan Oily•ira, both of
whom competed despite having a
touch of the flu, "or some bug
going around," according to
Wentz.
In the Tumwater match, the
Climbers lost to state 108-pound
champ Randy Wollen and
runner-up Phil Parrish at 141 -
both by pins - but came back to
win seven of the last nine events
by pins.
Included in that flurry was a
15-second pin by Jesse Sharpes at
178 pounds. Pat O'Brien earned a
draw in lus first varsity match
ever.
