Pioneer
By CARMEN YATES
The Christmas program at
Pioneer School last Thursday
evening was packed with
wall-to-wall people to enjoy the
excellent program.
The program began with
several selections by the
combined beginning and advanced
bands directed by Mike Gibson. A
boutonniere was presented to
Mike G son by Susie Dickinson.
Also Gary Laubach presented Jill
Jones with a corsage.
Miss Linda Rinearson wrote
the poems recited by her two
kindergarten classes.
The combined two groups of
first graders sang two selections.
The second grade also sang about
two Christmas selections.
Next on the program the third
grade class presented two skits
entitled, "Frosty the Snowman"
and "Mrs. Santa Claus Saves the
Day."
The combined classes of
fourth, fifth and sixth grades sang
a number of Christmas songs.
During this Calista Evans sane
"Oh, Little Town of Bethlehem"
as a solo. And David Lybecker
and Kevin Knoop did "Silent
Night" as a duet.
Winners of the sales contests
for each grade were Tammy Rede
and Tim Hammond, who tied for
the sixth grade class.
The fifth grade winner was
Brenda Russell and Kristin Barstad
was fourth grade winner.
Doreen Cook won the third
grade prize and Frances Gallagher
was second grade winner.
The two first grade winners
were Thea Johnson and Sharon
Moore.
For the two kindergarten
classes the winners were Shyanne
Wheyh and Michelle Waggoner.
A special thanks to the
Raymonds for this year's
beautiful huge Christmas tree.
Flood victims may be
eligible for tax cuts
Victims of the recent flooding
in many Washington areas may be
eligible for special tax benefits
according to an announcement by
IRS District Director Michael
Sassi here recently. Sassi noted
that persons who suffered
property damage or loss are
eligible for casualty loss tax
deductions.
"There are two ways the
property-owner can claim the
casualty loss deductions," Sassi
said. "They can report them as
itemized deductions and reduce
their taxes on their 1975 federal
income tax return, or they can
amend last year's tax return and
claim a refund from 1974."
The IRS director noted that
either way, the property-owner
will need records to establish the
"fair market value" of damaged
or destroyed property. He
recommended several ways this
might be accomplished, even if
such records were lost in the
flood.
"Insurance agents usually
have some information available
on the property they insure, and
that's a good place to start," he
said. Sassi also noted that any
photographs showing the
property before the flood are
helpful, as are account records at
stores where furniture, appliances
and similar items were purchased.
If vehicles were lost or damaged,
the dealer where the vehicle was
purchased may be able to help
establish a value.
In the case of damage to real
estate, the IRS director
mentioned that property
appraisals done in recent years
would be very helpful and most
appraisers would have copies on
file. Photographs of the real estate
before and after the damage
might also help establish the
amount of damage.
Sassi said the IlLS has a free
"'Disaster Workbook," Publication
584, available. This workbook
will assist the taxpayer in
determining the amount of loss
sustained. It may be obtained at
local IRS offices, or obtained by
mail by dialing the toll-free tax
assistance number listed in local
telephone directories under U.S.
Government - Internal Revenue
Service.
Persons filing amended tax
returns to claim their loss on last
year's taxes should place the
notation "Disaster Claim" in the
lower lefthand corner of the
envelope. That will assure prompt
processing of the return at the
IRS Center in Ogden, Utah. The
mailing address for returns is
1160 West 1200 South Street,
Ogden, Utah 84201.
