BASKETBALL
It was Dec. 13 when Castle
Rock found itself on Bulldog
courts running the ball past us,
6045.
NM had a hard time sinking
the ball, taking 14 of 61 shots
(23%) from the floor and
connecting l 7 of 31 freethrows
(55%). Turnovers also hampered
NM from gaining ground as they
totaled 25.
"If we can cut down on
turnovers I think we'll be all
right," commented Coach Lance
Thurston. '`we're getting good
shots, but we aren't hitting," he
added.
Bulldogs met their first league
encounter by entertaining Orting
in Belfair. NM fell under the
Cards' wing by a sound defeat,
85-44. Orting took control early
and ran the ball for their fifth
straight win of the season.
The Bulldogs had an early
lead of 14-10 but quickly felt the
jolt as the Cardinals ran up a
40-22 halftime advantage.
"We tried to run with them
and that was a mistake," admitted
Coach Thurston. "We got behind
and tried to press and we ended
up giving them lay-ins. We didn't
give up. We were just outmatched.
The fact that we didn't give up is
fourth and third respectively.
Vashon left its island to
wrestle in Belfair Dec. 16 in the
Bulldogs' first league encounter
this year. NM grapplers
dominated the winner's circle by
defeating the Pirates 47-17.
NM was powered to the final
points with three pins and two
forfeits in the higher weight
classes.
''We actually won it in the
higher division but a few of the
kids did well down lower. Loren
Chilton usually wrestles 122 but
went up to 129 and won. Also
John Moyer (158) did an
outstanding job," reflected NM
Castle Rock was in control at what pleases me." ,, wrestling coach Ed Amick.

Three days following the
Castle Rock game NM found itself
down in Montesano and barely
dropped the game by a five-point
deficit, 58-53.
Coach Thurston, however,
was pleased with NM's effort.
"This was probably our best game
of the year. We played real well
except for a few mental errors."
The lead changed hands
several times with NM down by
one point at halftime. Guard Ron
Burrows and sophomore Bud
McKay gave good performances in
the game.

(158) and Dennis Shirk (Hvy.).
NM's John Stark (141) and
Darwin Floyd (Hvy.) pla-ed
NM racked up their league foe
for a super triumph, furthering
their winning season.
"I thought our kids did an
outstanding job against them,"
praised Coach Amick. "They have

and from 129 pounds to 168 all
the kids were ones that had gone
to regionals."

GIRLS' BASKETBALL
Our girl basketball stars have
been running down courts making
a name for themselves these past
few days.
Slating a 1-1 record this far
are coach Jan Johnson's varsity
players. ''We ve been playing well
and look forward to a good
season." .,~,
In their first encounter ~,~
took Eatonville 42-38. A
disappointing but close loss was
handed to Yelm in overtime
23-15.
Coach Toni Smith has guideu
her Bulldog J.V. team to an
impressive 3-0 record. Eatonville
fell to them 22-20 and the Yelm
game they won by a low-scoring
16-15 margin. Charles Wright has
also fallen in their path, losing to
NM 19-15.
The varsity team with six
games left will look to make their
record 7-1 ,while the girls' J.V.
