Guilty pleas: Three opt out of trials Three people scheduled for trial at the end of the year changed their pleas on Friday, December 21, in Mason County Superior Court. • Paul Curtis Smith, 50, of 309 SE Arcadia Road, Shelton, en- tered a guilty plea to an amended charge of assault in the fourth de- gree, a gross misdemeanor. Smith was convicted of domestic violence against Anita M. Selby on October 20, with the defendant identifying the victim as his girlfriend. As part of the plea agreement the charge against him was re- duced from assault in the second degree, a "strike" under the ha- bitual offender act, Judge James Sawyer said. Persons convicted of three serious and violent offenses are sentenced under this law to life in prison. Deputy Prosecutor Rebecca Jones Garcia said the reduced charge was based on recent infor- mation from the victim, who re- sides in California and her reluc- tahoe about testifying. "She is not pleased about coming here, Jones ( • arcm added, noting to bring her here to testit would be expensive fi)r the state. "So this is a plea of convenience;" Sawyer said.
