Guilty pleas:
Three opt out of trials
Three people scheduled for trial
at the end of the year changed their
pleas on Friday, December 21, in
Mason County Superior Court.
• Paul Curtis Smith, 50, of
309 SE Arcadia Road, Shelton, en-
tered a guilty plea to an amended
charge of assault in the fourth de-
gree, a gross misdemeanor. Smith
was convicted of domestic violence
against Anita M. Selby on October
20, with the defendant identifying
the victim as his girlfriend.
As part of the plea agreement
the charge against him was re-
duced from assault in the second
degree, a "strike" under the ha-
bitual offender act, Judge James
Sawyer said. Persons convicted of
three serious and violent offenses
are sentenced under this law to
life in prison.
Deputy Prosecutor Rebecca
Jones Garcia said the reduced
charge was based on recent infor-
mation from the victim, who re-
sides in California and her reluc-
tahoe about testifying. "She is not
pleased about coming here, Jones
(
• arcm added, noting to bring her
here to testit would be expensive
fi)r the state. "So this is a plea of
convenience;" Sawyer said.
Smith faces a sentencing range
of tom zero to 365 days in the
Mason County Jail, with the state
recommending 365 days with 310
suspended, the judge said. Sawyer

This particular creek flows
year-round through the Belfair
Urban Growth Area and into

voted unanimously to name it

Viola (Newkirk) Hill was of
a family that owned property
through which a certain creek
flows for more than 70 years, as
is indicated in the history which
Davis wrote. VanBuskirk's pro-
posal that the stream flowing into
the river be named Viola Creek is
supported by three of Hill's rela-
tives who live in Belfair: Doro-
thy Harper, Barbara Eklund and
Rona Schroeder.
Miggie Creek would flow into
the pond and commemorate her
sister, Margaret Hill. "Viola and
Margaret were sisters whose fam-
ily owned the property that these
two streams flowed through,"
VanBuskirk wrote in a note to
Maki.
MIGGIE LIVED in a house
that bordered the stream during
the Twenties and Thirties and
was a partner with her husband
in what later became the public
transit system in Bremerton. "She
was a bus driver for the system,"
VanBuskirk wrote. "She was also
very involved with her children in
the school system."
Maki said the proposals con-
cerning Viola and Miggie creeks
may be considered by the Wash-
ington State Board on Geographic
Names at its next meeting, which
is set fbr May 9, 2008.
