SPORTS JOURNAL Soccer's Brit, football's Kyle: Climber all-state first-teamers Brit Bowman and Kyle Burbridge 00oiamittee to work up athletic survey: ISports input sought In the hope of developing a sur- vey to be used to address various matters of interest and/or concern, Shelton High School athletic di- rector Bill Hicks is seeking volun- teers to form a committee. "Just to get an idea of their feel- ings and perceptions," he says, adding that positions will be open to anyone interested, including players and parents and even un- related community members. The idea, says the AD, is they will be able to put together an "athletic program survey" to be used as a handout at the start of the season to feel out a range of is- sues such as how the kids are do- ing in class and even their feelings about specific coaches. Anyone interested in participat- ing on the committee is asked to contact Hicks at the high school or by emailing him at bhieksChel- tonsehools.org. Climbers Brit Bowman and Kyle Burbridge surprised the odds makers last week by earning Associated Press all-state distinc- tion by vote of Washington sports- writers. Knight in Matlock but has played to all-league distinction here each of the past three seasons because the Owls have no soccer program, had 12 goals and three assists this year as the Climbers' kick girls placed second in the conference by way of a ten-win season - a six-win improvement in a single year - and earned their first district tournament berth in school history. She scored on a remarkable 48 percent of the shots she took. "Brit is a great short passer, sees the field real well, and then can attack with speed," says Climber coach Brett Bartlett, who earned conference co-"Coach of the Year" distinction. "She always provides that extra level of attack, where, you know, if a team doesn't see her comin', they're in a bad way. A lot of times even if they DO see her comin' she's gonna blow by 'em." BURBRIDGE BROKE both single-game and season rushing records fbr the Highclimbers this fall, amassing 330 against state- ranked and unbeaten North Thur= ston in the fifth game of the season and finishing with 1,653 yards and 23 touchdowns on the year as the Climbers finished second in league and made it to the first round of the state playoffs. The 5-8, 170-pounder's TD count represents a new single- season standard at Climberville as well, by the way. Kyle finished his Climber ca- reer with 2,798 rushing yards.
