Harstine Island:
Bringing cheer
to sands of Iraq
By JOHN COOPER
Roger Van Parys, a Harstine Is-
lander giving civilian help to our
armed forces in Iraq has sent us
another e-mail. Although he and
those who are working with him
are miles away in a land where the
prevailing culture is much differ-
ent from ours, customs familiar to
us do appear. He calls it "Christ-
mas in the sandbox."
He wrote: "Well the Christmas
spirit has arrived here in the war
zone. Artificial trees are appearing
in the cubicles and strings of orna-
ments are strung over the aisles
and tethered to stacked battle
gear. It is a somewhat surreal en-
vironment."
Van Parys informs us that the
care packages are arriving with all
sorts of "cookies and/or crumbles"
courtesy of the mail handlers "and
there are stockings hanging and
awaiting Saint Nick's visit. It is
quite nostalgic in a macabre sort
of way." He wrote:
"The mess hall, that elegant
eatery, featuring parched pork and
charred chicken, is all alight with
festive trimming and flashing red
and green lights. As I am writing
this I can hear someone whistling
'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' down
the hall. Now he may be whistling
'Adeste Fideles,' but my Latin is a
bit rusty. All in all' Tis the Season
To Be Jolly.'"
WITH ALL THAT decoration
making things "look a lot like
Christmas" Roger feels a lot like
Saint Nick and may play Santa in
his way: "Every year at home we
give the postman and other service
suppliers a small gift at Christ-
mas. This year I decided to contin-
ue the tradition here with three of
my service favorites." His favorites
are: the janitor who sweeps up all
the dead flies that get swatted on a
daily basis; the laundry man who
never smiles but doesn't smash
his buttons; and the sewage pump

Harstine Island:
Bringing cheer
to sands of Iraq
By JOHN COOPER
Roger Van Parys, a Harstine Is-
lander giving civilian help to our
armed forces in Iraq has sent us
another e-mail. Although he and
those who are working with him
are miles away in a land where the
prevailing culture is much differ-
ent from ours, customs familiar to
us do appear. He calls it "Christ-
mas in the sandbox."
He wrote: "Well the Christmas
spirit has arrived here in the war
zone. Artificial trees are appearing
in the cubicles and strings of orna-
ments are strung over the aisles
and tethered to stacked battle
gear. It is a somewhat surreal en-
vironment."
Van Parys informs us that the
care packages are arriving with all
sorts of "cookies and/or crumbles"
courtesy of the mail handlers "and
there are stockings hanging and
awaiting Saint Nick's visit. It is
quite nostalgic in a macabre sort
of way." He wrote:
"The mess hall, that elegant
eatery, featuring parched pork and
charred chicken, is all alight with
festive trimming and flashing red
and green lights. As I am writing
this I can hear someone whistling
'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' down
the hall. Now he may be whistling
'Adeste Fideles,' but my Latin is a
bit rusty. All in all' Tis the Season
To Be Jolly.'"
WITH ALL THAT decoration
making things "look a lot like
Christmas" Roger feels a lot like
Saint Nick and may play Santa in
his way: "Every year at home we
give the postman and other service
suppliers a small gift at Christ-
mas. This year I decided to contin-
ue the tradition here with three of
my service favorites." His favorites
are: the janitor who sweeps up all
the dead flies that get swatted on a
daily basis; the laundry man who
never smiles but doesn't smash
his buttons; and the sewage pump
