Auditor saysl
county still
has 'issues'
Mason County has some "is-
sues," according to an examina-
tion of last year's books by the of-
fice of Washington State Auditor
Brian Sonntag that "focused on
specific areas that have potential
for abuse and misuse of public re-
sources."
His deputies examined books
kept by managers of the county
government during the 2006 cal-
endar year and concluded that in
most areas the county complied
with state laws and regulations,
as well as its own policies and
procedures. "Its internal controls !
were adequate to safe.guard pub-
lic assets," they wrote.
At the same time they rote
there were some issues identi-
fied in connection with last year's
books and these were addressed in
conversation with county offÉcials,
with Sonntag's office indicating
appreciation of the county's "com-
mitment to resolving the issues."
The auditors didn't specify
what these issues were, but in
2002, 2003 and 2004 audits "con-
tained findings regarding inad-
equate internal controls over cash
receipting and accounting for
trust funds" by the Mason County
Sheriffs Office.
A former correctional officer
at the Mason County Jail was
charged in 2004 with stealing
money from the inmates' fund at
the Mason County Jail. State au-
ditors worked with county pros-
ecutors on the case.
The latest audit specified no
"findings" in a report published on
November 19, this being a word
that describes issues of a serious
and ongoing nature.
As for the sheriffs office, the
auditors noted that audits con-
ducted of the books last year and
in 2005 "showed improvement" in
the handling of money by the staff,
with Sonntag's crew expressing
its belief that this reflects the
county's "desire and commitment
to maintain proper controls over
its operations."

Auditor saysl
county still
has 'issues'
Mason County has some "is-
sues," according to an examina-
tion of last year's books by the of-
fice of Washington State Auditor
Brian Sonntag that "focused on
specific areas that have potential
for abuse and misuse of public re-
sources."
His deputies examined books
kept by managers of the county
government during the 2006 cal-
endar year and concluded that in
most areas the county complied
with state laws and regulations,
as well as its own policies and
procedures. "Its internal controls !
were adequate to safe.guard pub-
lic assets," they wrote.
At the same time they rote
there were some issues identi-
fied in connection with last year's
books and these were addressed in
conversation with county offÉcials,
with Sonntag's office indicating
appreciation of the county's "com-
mitment to resolving the issues."
The auditors didn't specify
what these issues were, but in
2002, 2003 and 2004 audits "con-
tained findings regarding inad-
equate internal controls over cash
receipting and accounting for
trust funds" by the Mason County
Sheriffs Office.
A former correctional officer
at the Mason County Jail was
charged in 2004 with stealing
money from the inmates' fund at
the Mason County Jail. State au-
ditors worked with county pros-
ecutors on the case.
The latest audit specified no
"findings" in a report published on
November 19, this being a word
that describes issues of a serious
and ongoing nature.
As for the sheriffs office, the
auditors noted that audits con-
ducted of the books last year and
in 2005 "showed improvement" in
the handling of money by the staff,
with Sonntag's crew expressing
its belief that this reflects the
county's "desire and commitment
to maintain proper controls over
its operations."
