Sex offender moves to new Belfair address STAFF REPORT The Mason Coun- ty Sheriffs Office an- nounced this week that Level 3 sex offender Kev- in Lawrence Guptil had moved to a location near the 100 block of N.E. Straub Hill in Belfair. Guptil, 32, is a white male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall. Guptil is required to register as a sex offender for multiple sex offenses. In October 2008, he was convicted in Mason Coun- ty Superior Court of two counts of rape of a child in the third degree and one count of child molesta- tion in the sec- ond de- gree. He is under su- pervision Kevin by the De- Guptil partment of Correc- tions and is not allowed to be where minors congregate, or to associate with minors without proper supervi- sion. The sherrif£s office has classified Guptil as a lev- el 3 sex offender, mean- ing that he is at a high risk to reoffend. poll I res ca n STAFF REPORT pr@mc,.so~co.n(y.com With the holidays upon us, a wood fire is an enjoyable way to cozy up at home. Unfortunately, according to the Washington state Department of Health (DOH), the smoke from wood fires can be a health hazard for some people. Burning wrapping paper adds to air pollution by releasing toxins and heavy metals into the air we breathe. The pretty colors of the flames may be the result of metals such as barium, cadmium and lead. The DOH states in a news re- lease that wood smoke and other air pollutants can be trapFed near the ground when winter air pat- terns cause periods of stagnant air. rom Smoke contains fine particles and toxic gases that can be breathed deep into the lungs where they can cause immediate and long-term health problems. People with heart and lung dis- eases (such as asthma), includ- ing older adults who may have unrecognized health conditions, may have symptoms sooner than healthy adults. Children can be more affected, in part because their developing lungs are more easily damaged, and they often spend more time outside. The level of air pollution that causes health problems is different for each person, the DOH states in a news release. For some, a simple activity such as taking a walk may cause diffi- culty; others may not be affected until they do more strenuous activ- ity like running or snow shoveling. In a news release, the DOH states that when air quality is poor, people should limit outdoor activities and reschedule them for a time when air quality is better. Often air pollution can't be seen or smelled, so it's hard to know how bad it might be, the DOH states in a news release. Check air quality before taking part in outdoor activ- ities, especially if you're in a high- risk group. Learn more about how air qual- ity conditions can affect your health. Real-time information on air quality conditions and statistics on air pollution for most counties is online.
