Neah Bay traps Knight Owls By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounty.eom The Mary M. Knight boys' basket- ball team fell into Neah Bay's trap last week. Playing against a 1-2-2 trap press, the Knight Owls lost at Neah Bay 71- 49. "Neah Bay scored well, they're a good team," head coach Tim Diggle said. "Plus, there were lots of turn- overs on us." He said the Owls had a difficult time running their offense against Neah Bay's press. "Even though we worked on it, we still struggled," Diggle said. Despite the score, Diggle said the Knight Owls' defense played well for the most part. "On offense, we'd get our open shot, but couldn't finish," he said. He called Neah Bay a good team and said they are well disciplined. Senior Kyle Willey led the Knight Owls with eight points. FRIDAY: Senior Cory O'Neil Neah Bay .... 71 scored five points and MMK ........... 49 snagged 11 rebounds and four steals. TODAY: Mary Mary M. Knight M. Tahoma pinned down the Shelton wrestling team in a 3A Narrows L~ague dual match last week. i Shelton lost 45-36 on Dec. 20 at Mt. Tahoma. "Overall, we performed poorly against Mt. Tahoma," head coach Chris Lacy isaid. "The Mt. Tahoma wrestlers performed well and we got off of our game plan." Lacy said bright spots for Shelton in the match ~ame from Shelby ,Fratello, Mi- chael Hackler, Riley Rifle, Taylor Haskell, Kaitlin Woods, Forrest Hunter, Alan Medina and Ben AnderSon. "Shelby was dominant in her match, b~t was not able to stop locking her hands," Lacy said. "She did keep her composure and hit many of the techniques that we prac- tice every day." Hackler, Haskell and Rifle all showed improve- ment in their skills, Lacy said. The three won their bouts by pin. "Kaitlin, Forrest and DEC. 20: Mt. Tahoma. 45 Shelton ........ 36 TOMORROW: Shelton at Pacific Coast Championships at Fort Vancouver Alan each performed well in losing ef- forts," Lacy said. "Forrest and Alan each had their first experi- ences in a varsity dual." He said Anderson continues to have an excellent season. "He worked on several new techniques last night on his way to a second-round pin," Lacy said. The biggest improvement from the Shelton grapplers came on the girls' team. "They are starting to come into their own and will start to see the benefits of their hard work very soon," Lacy said. He said the varsity wres- tlers, especially the seniors, need to execute at a much higher level. "They got off the game- plan last weekend and have not got back to where we need to be," he said. "A lot of things that we don't recognize as our technique have been happen- ing of late. This is costing us individual matches and ... led to a loss for our team in a dual that we should definite- ly (have won.)" Lacy said he expects the team to get back to what they do next week. "If not, then we will have a very tough week of compe- tition," he said. "Our varsity team competes at the Pa- cific Coast Championships at Fort Vancou,/er next Fri- day and Saturday. This is a high level tournament with numerous outstanding pro- grams. We will have to com- pete at a very high level to be successful." The girls' and the junior varsity teams will be com- peting at North Mason in the Hawkins Memorial and Classic Tournaments on Fri- day and Saturday. "This is a perfect oppor- tunity for them to get a lot of mat time and show how much they have improved," Lacy said. a a By EMILY HANSON enJi/y(,~m, aso~tco~in,(v.cont For a few hours on Saturday, rugby took over the field at Oakland Bay Junior High. In the second annual Shelton boys' rugby alumni game, the alumni came out strong to defend their victory from last year and increase their series record to 2-0. "For a lot of the alumni being out of shape and not playing for a couple of years, I was impressed," alumni team captain Josh Duchene said. "A l'ot of the current players are learning the game still. Their season doesn't start until the end of January." Though no official score was kept for the 15s game -- when both teams play with 15 members on the field -- the alumni players joked after the game that they had won 45- 7. Duchene said the game is fun for the alumni because many of them have spread out far and wide from Shelton. "We have one guy from Arizona, one from New Mexico," he said. "We're coming from all over and it's good to see that we can all still play rugby." Jake Lindley, the current players' team captain, said he thought his team played well for its first turnout of the season. "We haven't started practices yet so we're still learning," Lindley said. "Learning's the big thing we're after today." He said the outcome of the game wasn't a surprise. "We usually play on the weekends with a lot of the alumni guys and they stay pretty active," he said. "They had us beat on expe- rience." Lindley said the upcoming season will be an exciting one for the boys' team. "We were state contenders last year," he added. "It'll be great for the community to cheer us on." Duchene wished the current players luck with their upcoming season. Saturday was the first time a girls' alumni game was held, since the girls' team traditionally has fewer members than the boys. Because of a lack of numbers, the girls' alumni game was a 7s game -- when both teams play with seven members on the field Journal photo by Emily Hanson Brian Nault, a Shelton boys' rugby player, takes a hit from an alumni player during the boys' alumni game at Oakland Bay Junior High. --- and was played in two 10-minute halves during the halftime of the boys' game. "The girls were even," referee Nick Dean said. "The first half was dominated by the alumni and the second half by the current players." Once again, no official score was kept. However Dean said the game was a tie. "There were some girls out there who stepped it up and played well," he said. "It was a fun game all around." Dean said he can't wait to come back next year for the alumni games. Coach Chris Nesmith said the games are played in December because that is when most of the alumni players return to the Shelton area.
