Jane Lybecker
High School Spotlight
Born on February 24, 1962
in Pullman, Jane Lybecker
became a resident of Walla Walla
at the age of two months. A
year later the family moved to
Othello.
"We lived there for five
years," she says, "and I started
school there. I came to Shelton
as a fourth-grader?'
Jane is the daughter of Judy
and Russ Lybecker. Her brother,
David, is a Shelton High School
freshman. Her sister, Sarah, is a
sixth-grade student.
As a Shelton High School
senior Jane studies hot spot
geography, second-year Spanish,
chemistry, contemporary world
problems and calculus. She is a

out for track for the last three
years, lettering the past two
years. For two years she has held
membership in Z Club and in
Spanish Club.
"Outdoor sports are my
hobby," she states. 'q also read a
whole lot, and I play guitar and
piano. I like animals and I have a
dog. lie's half Lab and half
Samoyed."
Macrame and role painting
are among her interests, and Jane
Lybecker is employed as a page
at Timberland Library where she
works after school two days each
• week and also on Saturdays.
She serves as treasurer of
Faith Lutheran Youth Group,
and she is a member of
Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"I would like to attend
declares Jane Lybecker,
IWant to'study foreign
languages. I might become a
teacher."
SUZY FOX, daughter of Mr.'and Mrs. William D. Fox of
Shelton, will marry Pat Stuart whose parents are Mr. and
Mrs. Robert E. Stuart of Georgia. Miss Fox was graduated
from Grays Harbor College. Her fiance, formerly of Virginia
and now a Shelton resident, is a graduate of Stockbridge
High School in Georgia.

Cookin ?
She remembers Minnesota home
"I was born in Minnesota"
says Corda Watkins, "and ! lived
there until 1945. It's still 'back
home' to me!"
After graduation from high
school in Mankato, Minnesota,
Corda lived for many years in
Minneapolis where she was active
in politics and served as PTA
president.
"In 1945," she reminisces, "I
came to Maple Valley to stay
with my daughter, Connie Frank,
while her husband was in the
service. I was a widow at that
time.
"Two years later I bought a
ranch near Oakville and for five
years raised Holstein cattle. I
moved to Olympia in 1953. I
married John Watkins.
"In 1958 we bought the old
Eldon School building. I lived in
it but John kept on with his job
at Lacey Plywood. A year later
we purchased a trailer park with
coffee shop and gas station. It
was located north of Brinnon.
"John retired from Lacey
Plywood in 1962 and we later
sold the trailer park. Now we
live in the old so.heel building,
and it has converted beautifully.
We have a huge lawn, a
spectacular view and room for all
of our hobbies"
While living in Olympia
Corda Watkins was a member of
Order of Eastern Star and also
held membership in Capitol
Garden Club.
"I was very active with the
garden group," she recalls, "and
I held many offices. I enjoyed it
a lot. When we came to the
Eldon area I joined Hood Canal
Garden Club and I was
vice-president for a year. I was
matron of Elinor Chapter OES in
1963 and 1964."
"In 1968," says Corda, "we
bought property in Phoenix,
Arizona and we lived there for
to many of her menus.
"Chicken corn soup was a
great favorite in the 'Dutch'
country," says Corda, "at family
reunions and community picnics
gallons of it simmered in big iron
kettles all through the corn
season."
Chicken Corn Soup
(Hinkel Welslman Supp)
1 stewing chicken
8 ears corn (or 2 pints
whole kernel)
2 hard boiled eggs
salt and pepper to taste
1 onion
chopped parsley

Cut up chicken and put in pot ,.

pepper. Stew until tender. -
Remove chicken, cut meat into
one-inch pieces, return to broth
with corn (cut from ears)or
whole kernel corn.
REvels
Make revels by combining 1½ C.
flour, a small amount of salt and
one beaten egg. Mix together
with fingers to form crumbs.
Add these to broth and boil 15
minutes more. Drop in chopped
hard boiled eggs and parsley.
Grandmother's Noodles
5 C. flour
1 tsp. salt
6 eggs
Stir together in large bowl three
cups of flour and 1 tsp. salt.
Make a well in middle of flour -
break in eggs. Two at a time.
Stir after each addition. Sift in
more flour until dough is stiff.
Cover hands lightly with flour to
prevent sticking and knead
dough. If dough is sticky add
more flour. Divide dough into
three or four portions and roll
out 1/8" thick. Sift flour over
rolled out dough, cover with dry
two winters. We didn't like it. towel and let stand one hour.

out on table to dry. Toss
Corda Watkins plays both
piano and organ, and she is
musician for Elinor Chapter. Her
musical instrument holds a
prominent place in a huge hobby
room where Corda works on
many handicrafts.
"For the last three years,"
she states, 'Tve participated in
the Amaranth bazaar. Last year
we sold 65 pair of my 'Snow
People.' I make many other
bazaar items and Christmas
novelties."
Mrs. Watkins grows
houseplants, but does not care
for too many indoor specimens.
"I was born on a farm and
I'm a farmer at heart" she
declares. 'Tin best at growing
outdoor things. I raise a big
vegetable garden."
A huge part-Manx cat and a
crearn-eolored Pehingese are her
pets. She likes heirlooms, and
she treasures a quilt pieced by
her mother.
On October 15 Corda and
her husband celebrated an
anniversary.
"It was a beautiful day," she
recalls, "and my six
great-grandchildren held an
outdoor picnic while the adults
attended the indoor reception."
Corda Watkins, whose father
was Pennsylvania Dutch, still
cooks the dishes that she
enjoyed as a child. However, she
has added Pacific Northwest fare

noodles lightly in flour before
putting in broth- shake off as
much excess flour as possible.
Some people cook in salted
water before adding to broth -
but we prefer the thickening
from the little amount of flour
still on noodles. Cook 25-30
minutes. More water may be
required. '
Chicken Stock
1 fat chicken
3 bouillion cubes
salt and pepper
2 qts. of water
Cook chicken until tender;
remove from stock. Skin and
bone and cut into bite size
pieces. Strain stock to remove
bones, etc. Add water to make
two quarts. Add three
bouillion cubes. Bring to boil.
Add noodles. Stir constantly
until all noodles are added -
then cover and simmer 25
minutes. Add chicken.
Geoduck Chowder
C. bacon - cut small
pieces
1 lg. onion - chopped
2 mad. potatoes - cut
small pieces
2 stalks celery - cut
small pieces
1 pint geoduck dams or
1 C. fresh
Brown bacon and onion; add
potatoes and water to<cover.

A CREAM-COLORED PEKE is her pet. Corda Watkins is
also fond of a huge part-Manx cat, a Iongtime member of
the household.
Add geoducks and simmer until
potatoes are very tender. If too
thick add water to thin. Bring to
boil. Add one can condensed
milk and serve. You may add egg
dumplings to chowder and cook
before adding the condensed
Dumplings
1 egg
2 Tbsp. water
¼ tsp. salt
flour to make quite a stiff
batter
Drop by very small portions
from teaspoon. If you dip spoon
into the boiling chowder after
each dumpling they will not
stick to spoon. If your batter is
not thick enough - it will just
make your chowder thicken, so
add a little more flour and try
again. You don't want them too
stiff, either. After dumplings
have cooked a few minutes, add
one cup regular milk and one
can condensed milk.
