Wrestlers' gallopin
getaway gets awa
Experience proved more than
a match for youthful exuberance
last week, and the upshot of it
all is the Highclimber wrestlers
no longer sit unscathed atop the
Black Hills League heap.
Elma's upperclassman-
dominated Eagles made short
work of Shelton's
frosh-dominated Climbers here a
week ago Wednesday, winning
the battle of unbeatens by a
surprisingly easy 45-15 count.
Shelton, 2-0 going into the
match and apparently a real
contender despite the fact that
as many as half a dozen of its
young denizens have wrestled
varsity as mere freshmen, looked
like a winner in the early goings.
Climber junior Tad
Rutherford pinned Eagle Rick
Hawkins to take the 101 bout
and then senior teammate Mark
Taylor did the same against his
foe at 108.
But then the visitors turned
the tables. Sparked by Eagle Jim
Kloetzer's 6-1 vanquishment of
two-time state competitor Jerry
Newcomb, Elma proceeded to
win the next seven matches and
nine out of eleven to win going
away.
Only Climber sophomore
Mike Buechel, in fact, was able
to prevail for the hosts after the
turnaround - and that wasn't
until the 168-pound bout.
In defense of the Climbers,
though, Shelton's matmen really
weren't at full strength.
Newcomb was just coming back
from an ankle injury, for
instance, and heavyweight Duane
Nault was already on his to
Alaska for the holidays.
But Climber
Wentz wasn't about to
excuses. "They came
he said. "It was a
experience."

EAGLE MATMAN Spencer
Morrison seems ready to
make a bargain with the
official last week during his
7-0 loss to Shelton
168-pounder Mike Buechel.
Morrison's loss was one of
only three suffered by the
visitors, though, as Elma
spoiled Shelton's perfect
record.
