New book celebral
By NATALIE JOHNSON
Fifth-generation Ma-
son County resident Mike
Fredson has a passion for
history. This week, he'll
debut his sixth book, "The
Artist Colony on Hood Ca-
nal: Pixley, Orre Nobles
and Waldo Chase.
"I like to bring all these
things to life," he said.
Fredson started the first
draft of his newest book
back in 2005, and with
the help of the community
around Hood Canal, has
amassed true gems of the
history of the artists who
once called Hood Canal
home.
"This is the centerpiece
of the canal - the time
when the canal had the ar-
ticulation of its best mag-
ic," he said.
Much of the book focuses
on the life of Orre Nobles,
a one-time art teacher and
world traveler whose par-
ents built Olympus Manor
in Union.
"He was totally delight-
ful - everybody loved him,"
Fredson said of Nobles.
Fredson's book boasts 24
color photos, many of which
are copies of envelopes No-
bles illustrated with scenes
of his world travels.
Many Union residents
today still have examples
of Nobles' unique art, Fred-
son said.
"There's people out con)
the canal who love this
stuff," he said.
The book also focuses on
another well-known artist
from the days of the artist
'colony - Waldo Chase.
Fredson said he once
"This is the c
of the canal
when the ca
articulation
knew Chase personally.
"I love Waldo more than
anything - he was prob-
ably 80 when I knew him,"
Fredson said.
Chase worked with wood
block art and once lived in
a teepee, Fredson said.
"He started out as a
teacher, but he didn't like
to work, so he learned to
make wood blocks," Fred-
son said.
Among the color and
black and white photos in
Fredson's book are exam-
ples of Chase's work, from
collections still located
on Hood Canal. including
Fredson's own.
While some of Fred-
son's other books are seri-
ous books about the great
businessmen and logging
tycoons of Mason County,
he was drawn to these
characters because they
represent an "alternative
culture" that was taking
place during the same time
period in the artist colony
on Hood Canal.
"They're really a collec-
tion of odd characters," he
said.
Fredson used many first-
hand materials from the
artist colony as research
materials. He studied orig-
inal works of art and even
the history of Hood Canal artists
enterpiece
- the time
had the
of its best
bund a copy of one of No-
ties' diaries.
Once people on the canal
leard about the project,
;hey clamored to get in-
7olved.
"People just keep send-
ng me stuff," Fredson said.
Fredson also exhibits a
~Iood Canal dollar bill in
;he book, used as curren-
'.y in the canal during the
great Depression. Fredson
laid this shows self-suffi-
;mncy and sustainability
m Hood Canal as early as
;he 1930s.
"It's really an ecosystem
mt there unique co itself."
le said.
Fredson said communi-
5es, like those along Hood
3anal, need to celebrate
md remember their his-
.ory.
"We need to reflect on
mr community," he said.
;You should always know
7our history - the first
.hing you should know is
Tour environment."
Fredson's book will be
available at the Cameo
Boutique, Alderbrook
Country Store and the
Blue Heron in Union, and
~age Book Store, the Ma-
son County Historical So-
~ety Museum and Lynch
reek Floral in Shelton.
