photographers always lean heavy on the clich -- a
picture says a thousand words.
It turns out they're correct.
Each year, our reporters, who are responsible for tak-
ing their own photographs that appear in the Journal,
spend countless hours trekking through brush, shivering
on the sidelines and pounding the pavement to get the
perfect photo to illustrate their stories.
While we can all agree that great journalism requires
fairness, clarity and an eye for detail, so does snapping a
photograph.
The following pages show some of the best photos that
our staffhave shot during the past 12 months. The sub-
ject matter in these photos varies wildly from photo to
photo, but one thing these images share is a sense of com-
munity.
Our reporters pride themselves on reporting on what's
going on in your backyard (not literally, of course, unless
you call us and ask us to be there) and sharing those mo-
ments with our readers.
We hope that you enjoy leafing through these images,
which we think were the best Journal photos of 2016.
