or many, 2016 brought a heaping
dose of the unexpected, myself
included. If someone would have
asked me on Jan. 1, 2016, to locate
Shelton, Washington, on a map from my
residence just outside of Hartford, Con-
necticut, I wouldn't have been able to do
it. Admittedly, I would've had a nearly as
difficult time finding
Shelton, Connecticut,
on a map as well, but
that's another story
for another time.
Fast forward to
exactly seven months
later. That was the
day I walked in the
door of the Journal By MICHAEL
office to start my first HEINBACH
day of work, having
moved across the
country to take the job sight unseen just
a week prior. After being offered the job
here at the Journal at the end of June, I
had just four days to figure out if I could
somehow manage to uproot my entire life
in a matter of five weeks and settle in a
spot about as far away within the conti-
nental U.S. as possible. I wanted badly
to take the job, but a truckload of minute
details had to fall in place in just the
right fashion in order for me to be able to
accept the job offer on the table and move
my life to the great state of Washington.
I spent the majority of those four
days under the same roof as my parents,
at the home in which I grew up, trying
desperately to find a way a way to make
it happen. Those four frantic days were
spent scrambling to find a cheap, one-
way flight to Seattle from any airport be-
tween New York and Boston (they don't
exist), trying to figure out where I might
stay once I arrived and if I could find a
financially prudent way to bring with me
my three guitars, an amplifier and a suit-
case full various other pieces of musical
equipment.
Somehow, someway, the planets
aligned properly and I found a way to
make it happen (minus a good portion of
music equipment), even if my next sever-
al weeks prior to moving here resembled
me re-enacting the final play of the 1982
Cal-Stanford football game and a Three
Stooges short at the same time. And now
that I've been in my seat at the Journal
for five months, I couldn't be happier
that things turned out the way they did.
That leads me to my point, that
in addition to events of my personal
life, the untimely loss of a handful of
beloved celebrities and the results of a
