Department.
The revisions requested by the
Highways Department, and
approved by the Washington State
Patrol and the Superintendent of
Public Instruction, will help clarify
school bus operations on
partially-controlled four and two
lane highways.
School buses cannot stop, and
pedestrians cannot cross, any
Interstate highway or
fully-controlled, limited-access
highway in Washington State.
The proposed revisions on the
four lane and two lane
partially-controlled state
highways would permit:
* school bus stops at
designated intersections with
necessary lanes provided by the
Highways Department.
* school bus stops at
designated widened shoulders off
the traveled lane, or on the
outside lane when no other stop is
feasible. Buses may stop on the
pavement in the right hand lane
when the proper sign and lights
are displayed.
* pedestrian crossings only at
grade intersections on four lane
highways. No school children are
allowed to cross these multi-laned
highways between intersections.
* pedestrian crossings on two
lane highways at grade
intersections, and at points not
less than 1 00 feet from a
designated school bus stop
located adjacent to the traveled
lane, when necessary advance
warning signals are installed.
School children may cross the
two lane highway when the
school bus stops on the traveled
lane.
